Nick is a field scientist with particular interest in ecosystem functioning, biodiversity, environmental change, public engagement in wildlife protection and conservation management capacity building. He has worked as international expert for MedWetCoastin a series of Mediterranean wetlands, advising on the evaluation of protected areas and the production of management plans. He has also devised and led workshops on eco-tourism and povery alleviation in protected areas of sub-Saharan Africa for the World Tourism Organisation. He was scientific editor for the MedWet publication Monitoring Mediterranean Wetlands. He acted as project leader for a project on sustainable resource use by communities in peripheral areas of Scotland, Norway and Swedish Lapland as part of the EU and Norwegian Government’s “Northern Periphery Programme; and is coordinator of FIMETI (Fair Isle Marine Environment and Tourism Initiative), a community initiative seeking sustainable management measures for the seas around Fair Isle, Scotland, through the establishment of a marine protected area. Hehas a Masters in Life Sciences: thesis Bird Migration Strategies in Western Europe. Awards: in the Balearics, the Alzina (oak tree) award from the GOB, 2008; in Scotland, the Nature of Scotland marine conservation award, 2013.
